CiA® test center

The CiA test center is an official CiA testing facility providing CANopen compliancy assessment services such as CANopen device conformance testing and CiA interoperability testing.

CANopen device conformance testing is used to determine whether CANopen devices comply with the requirements of CiA 301 "CANopen application layer and communication profile" specification.  CiA engineers carry out the device conformance testing using the automated test bench CANopen conformance test tool, developed by the CiA consortium.

The test tool is implemented according to CiA 310-1 "CANopen application layer conformance test plan" and is free of charge for our members.

CiA members may use this test tool to test their devices even in early stages of implementation for compliance to CANopen, i.e. to verify if their implementation is correct. Moreover, CiA members often pre-test their devices using the test tool before sending the devices to the CiA testing center for conformance testing.

CANopen interoperability testing is a CANopen network compatibility testing to determine whether CANopen devices can be integrated into a CANopen network and perform their function without causing any communication problems.

CiA engineers test the interoperability using a pre-configured CANopen network with CANopen compliant and interoperable devices controlled by PLC Modicon (Schneider Electric). All these devices, manufactured by CiA member companies, are mounted into a portable interoperability testing bench, that is also used as a interoperability demonstrator at the exhibitions as Embedded World and SPS in Nuremberg.

The test procedure is implemented according to the "CANopen application layer interoperability test plan".

Additionally, CiA organizes joint interoperability testing called CiA plugfests for its members. The plugfest makes sense in case many companies would test interoperability of their devices exceeding the testing capacity of the interoperability testing bench at CiA or CiA interoperability testing bench does not offer the functionality to test devices specially designed for certain applications like CANopen lift (CiA 417) or SIIS-level 2 devices (CiA 443). In case of such applications CiA member companies provide the control devices and end devices to tests their interoperability. Participants connect their devices to a joint network and test the interoperability of their devices with assistance of CiA engineers. Since 2014, the CiA test center also offers CAN FD plugfests to promote this new CAN standard.

These CiA services are not mandatory but give you an independent CANopen product compliancy evaluation especially if your customers require it. CANopen device certification and CANopen interoperability testing can be done independently. However, CiA recommends to perform the CANopen device testing using CANopen conformance test tool or CANopen conformance testing at CiA test center for application specific devices before the CANopen interoperability testing. CANopen interoperability testing is an optional service but it is recommended because the CANopen conformance testing alone doesn’t guarantee device interoperability.

CANopen interoperability testing:

Manufacturing is more than just putting parts together. It’s coming up with ideas, testing principles and perfecting the engineering, as well as final assembly.

There are no stupid questions!

The CiA office provides a CAN hotline service for technical, marketing, and product related questions. You can send your question by email (service(at)can-cia.org) or fax (+49-911-928819-79) or you can call us (+49-911-928819-0). Generally, we will answer your request within 24 hours, except on weekends or German holidays. If we need more time to respond to your inquiry, we will inform you.

There are no stupid questions, just stupid answers. CiA engineers have a good technical background and also some detailed knowledge on CAN technology. If we can't answer your question, perhaps we know someone who can. In the rare case that no answer is available, we will start to investigate jointly with our members to find a solution.
