June 2019

A word from the CiA Managing Director

The year passes by so quickly. It is already June and there is still so much on my to-do list. One of the things, which are on delay, is security. The ISO/SAE 21434 base document is still not in a very good shape. This general engineering guideline introduces also terms and definitions, which CiA would like to use in its CiA 701 security specification series.

Recently, I listened to a presentation on cyber-physical systems security. The author, Daniel DiMase, explained that in difference to traditional cybersecurity, cyber-physical security considers also tampering of sensors and actuators. “Attack vectors are introduced through vulnerabilities in electronic parts associated with tampering and from sources that have not been verified for trust.” This includes also attack vectors through hostile code at the time of software or firmware updates. He mentioned spying software deep within hard disks intentionally introduced by most of the world-market leading suppliers.

Do not forget that users are often the attackers. Just to name a few examples: tampered tachographs of commercial trucks, faked weight-overload measurements, or so-called Adblue emulators (see also some articles in the June issue of the CAN Newsletter). In order to make such “improvements” (viewpoint of the vehicle owner of driver) impossible, we need hardware assurance. Such hardware and its firmware (embedded software) needs to be free of known vulnerabilities, either intentionally or unintentionally designed or inserted as part of the system. Of course, also the application software needs to be cybersecured.

CiA’s Interest Group (IG) safety and security is working on these topics, but is not ready to publish first documents. Next meeting is beginning of July.

June issue of CAN Newsletter

The second issue of 2019 contains as usual more detailed articles as the CAN Newsletter Online sister publication. There are three articles about security aspects. Another article provides information about a CAN FD core featuring DMA (direct-access memory) functionality. It also complies with the CiA 603 time-stamping. The CAN Newsletter can be downloaded as a whole or article-wise. We would also appreciate, if you forward this information to colleagues, customers, and other business partners.

CiA publications - Read, write, advertise

The CAN Newsletter provides technical articles about latest trends in CAN-based networking. As well, CiA offers you to contribute technicals articles, or advertisement. If you are interested, please send us your banner/advertisement. Our media kit provides the relevant information. We are looking forward to assist you; please contact CiA office. The next issue of the CAN Newsletter magazine is published in September. The closing date for advertisement orders for this issue is on August 2.

Call for papers: iCC 2020

CiA is going to organize the 17th international CAN Conference (iCC) in Baden-Baden, Germany. It will take place on March 17 and 18. The program committee calls for papers. Deadline is September 1, 2019. Conference language is English. As usual, all papers will be published in the conference proceedings. Topics of the conference include CAN applications, CAN standardization, CAN-based higher-layer protocols, and CAN protocol implementations as well as tools and engineering. Papers on functional safety and security are also welcome, when they have some relations to CAN. Besides Classical CAN, the conference addresses also CAN FD solutions. Additionally, the program committee expects some papers on CAN XL, the next CAN protocol generation.

CAN in space workshop

The CAN in Space Workshop 2019 will be held June (11 to14) in Gothenburg, Sweden. The three-day event features a technical program of contributed papers describing the latest observations in embedded distributed systems and CAN networks with a special focus on micro-controllers. Invited speakers from academia, industry, and space agencies will present there. The preliminary program is now available.

CiA goes China

In June, CiA organizes several events in China introducing CAN FD and CANopen FD technologies. Additionally, an outlook to the future of CAN will be given. The CAN FD roadshow has four stops: Beijing, Qingdao, Shanghai, and Shenzhen. HMS, Hongke/Peak, Kvaser, and ZLG sponsor these one-day events. For details and registration, please use this hyperlink.
