A word from the CiA Managing Director

“Enjoy the small things in life, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things” (Robert Brault, American writer). How true: The CiA working group (WG) physical layer agreed in its first meeting in May 1992 on the pin-assignment of the 9-pin D-sub connectors. In those days, we did not use inclusive language and specified that the device implements a plug (male) connector and the network cable uses socket (female) connectors. For the wiring harness, two options were permitted: the so-called network “monolithic” approach with two connectors (in and out) as well as the so-called T-connector proposed by Kvaser. In this meeting, which took place at Dornier in Lindau (Germany) at the Lake of Constance, the participating CiA members (Berghof, Berner & Mattner, Dornier, esd, Kvaser, KEB, MTU, PEP, Philips Semiconductors, Softing, STZP, and myself) decided to use transceivers compliant with the ISO 11898 draft international standard. This document was in those days still in development, but Philips Semiconductors (now: NXP) already announced the first engineering samples for summer 1992.

The CAN pin-assignment for the above-mentioned connector was not a big deal. But it was very helpful for the CAN community in the last 30 years to achieve interoperability between CAN devices. CiA has recommended additional pin-assignments for other connector types. In the past, these pin-assignments were described in the CiA 303-1 document. But this document was somehow related to CANopen. Therefore, CiA will provide the CiA 106 technical report collecting all known connector pin-assignments for CAN applications. This document will contain pin-assignments by CiA and reference other pin-assignments recommended by ISO, IEC, SAE, etc., so that the reader has an overview on all relevant connectors used for CAN networks. This might be a big thing, especially for newbies.

Dual-modular redundancy (DMR)

The IG high-availability prepares the CiA 701-1 document specifying a generic dual-modular redundant CAN interface. The document specifies mainly the DMR function as an add-on function of the network layer. Additionally, the document specifies the physical layer of the DMR node comprising two independent CAN nodes. The CAN data frames are transmitted on both CAN lines, but only the CAN node on the active line processes the received packets and forwards them to the higher layers. Interested parties are invited to participate in the IG meetings or to comment on the CiA 701-1 work draft. Please contact secretary(at)can-cia.org.

Isobus: Universal terminal testing

The AEF project team “Universal Terminal UT3” is working on the development of the next generation of the UT conformance test. It will contain a new application, performing automated graphical tests, as well as new Isobus protocol test units, using the CANoe toolchain by Vector. The success of the project depends on appropriate test candidates, especially Isobus virtual terminals. Therefore, the team requests support from interested parties to submit products for testing by August 2022. The team leader Sven Mindrup can be contacted via the AEF office.
