A word from the CiA Managing Director
The installations of CAN FD (flexible data rate) networks are ramping up. Most of the automakers already migrated some in-vehicle networks from CAN CC (classic) to CAN FD, especially in powertrain applications. Commercial vehicle and non-automotive Industries are a little bit behind. Nevertheless, CANopen and J1939 experts have made their home works, developing appropriate specifications:
- CiA 1301 (CANopen FD application layer and communication profile)
- CiA 1305 (CANopen FD layer setting services and protocols)
- CiA 1310-1 (CiA 1301-related conformance test cases)
- CiA 1311-1 (XML schema definitions for CiA 1301)
- SAE J1939-17 (CAN FD Physical Layer, 500 kbps/2 Mbps)
- SAE J1939-22 (CAN FD data link layer)
CiA technical groups are working on additional CANopen FD related specifications, e.g., CiA 1302 series (CANopen FD additional application layer functions, such as network start-up management and configuration manager) as well as several CiA profiles. Interested parties are welcome to participate in the appropriate SIGs (special interest groups).
Currently, SAE fellows are reviewing J1939-17 and J1939-22 recommended practices, in order to consider first implementation experiences. The support of CAN SIC (signal improvement capability) transceiver will be introduced, too. Interested SAE members are welcome in the related SAE task forces. Myself and some CiA members actively participate in them. Peter Fellmeth from Vector edits the SAE J1939-22 document.
In its September issue, the CAN Newsletter magazine will focus on CAN FD. The editorial staff welcomes the submission of articles, especially application-oriented once. Of course, brief product news can be submitted, too. Deadline for contributions is mid of July.
19th international CAN Conference (iCC)
The 19th iCC takes place from March 3 to March 5, 2027 in Tutzing at Starnberg Lake in Germany. By September 15, 2026, it is possible to submit papers, to become a table top exhibitor, and to sponsor the iCC using submission forms on the CiA website. The three long-term CiA member companies emotas, esd electronics, and Vector are already sponsoring this unique conference.

Greenhouse automation workshop
The CiA workshop about greenhouse automation and vertical farming took place in May. It covered also the standardization activities in ISO/TC 347/WG 2 (project: ISO 34713-1: Controlled environment agriculture systems – Part 1: General concepts and control framework). The presentation slides are available on request. CiA is going to establish the SIG “greenhouse automation and vertical farming” (preliminary group name). Interested parties (also non-members) should contact CiA office, to get an invitation for the planned inaugural meeting in late summer.
CiA 417 (CANopen Lift) updated
The CANopen Lift documents have been revised. The updated four-part profile specification (CiA 417 series) for lift control systems introduces the virtual device for power supply units. Other already specified units have been improved by means of additional parameters. In addition, the documents have been editorially updated. This includes a restructuring of sub-clauses and some re-wordings, in order to clarify descriptions and specifications. The revised documents in draft specification proposal status (DSP) are only available for CiA members. The CiA 417 (version 2.0.0) specifications released as public available specification (PAS) are still online. However, CiA highly recommends to use the revised documents for new device implementations.
Security for CAN XL: CiA 613-2 released as DSP
CiA has released the version 1.0.0 of the CiA 613-2 CANsec data plane specification as a draft specification proposal (DSP). CANsec data plane aims to protect the data integrity, freshness, authenticity of origin and confidentiality of data in CAN-based networks using CAN XL communication, by reusing the security functionalities of MACsec. The document additionally addresses the primary key management requirements but leaves the specifics of a key exchange/distribution protocol out of scope. The specification is only available for CiA members.
CANopen Lift plugfest report
CAN in Automation organized it’s 25th CANopen Lift plugfest on May 12, 2026 at Mövenpick Airport Hotel in Nuremberg (Germany). There were 20 participants from ten companies. This time four lift controller manufacturers participated the plugfest: Böhnke + Partner, Georg Kühn Steuerungstechnik, Schneider Steuerungstechnik, and Thor Engineering (all four from Germany).
They arrived with their own lift host controllers and tested in one-to-one sessions the lift devices of BS Tableau (Germany), Cedes (Switzerland), Dinacell (Spain), Elgo Batscale (Liechtenstein), Genemek (Turkey), and Schaefer (Germany). Schneider Steuerungstechnik and Thor Engineering brought also their lift devices to test them with other lift controllers. The participants got feedback to refine their implementations, to fix issues, to test new functions, and to provide valuable input for improvement of the CiA 417 specification (CANopen Lift).
Call for speakers – CAN XL webinar series (fall 2026)
The CiA Marketing Group (MG) CAN XL is inviting CiA members to contribute as speakers to a planned CAN XL webinar series taking place in fall 2026. The series aims to provide technical insights into CAN XL and related CAN technologies through regular online sessions, helping to increase visibility and knowledge exchange within the community. Interested speakers are invited to submit their proposals 2026. Further details on topics, submission requirements, and the webinar structure are available on the dedicated webpage.
CAN Newsletter magazine: June issue 2026 published
The June issue highlights CAN products and applications for mobile machines. This includes also articles about CAN-connectable sensors. Additionally, the issue features an article by Kent Lennartsson (Kvaser) about “11 reasons to use CAN XL”.
EU sanction
Since April, Yangzhou Yangjie Electronic Technology specialized in TVS (transient voltage suppressor) diodes engineered for CAN protection is on the list of sanctioned companies. The Chinese semiconductor manufacturer is accused to supply its products to Russia for military equipment. These components safeguard electronic control units against destructive electrostatic discharges (ESD) and voltage transients. This sanction is proposed to be suspended for nine months, to avoid disruptions to European automotive supply chains.

+++ +++ Scanreco (Sweden), offering CAN-linkable remote control recievers, has acquired Crosscontrol (Sweden), supplying CAN-connectable human machine interfaces, also for NMEA 2000. +++ ISO/TC 22/SC 31/WG 4 is charged to develop the ISO SO 25753 (Common parameters for commercial vehicles) standard, comprising all parameters of ISO 11992 series, ISO 16844-4, ISO 25200, etc. in a machine-readable format. +++ Since the last issue, CiA has assigned CANopen vendor-IDs to Acculon Energy (U.S.A.), FSM (Germany), and Reventec (Great Britain). +++
Innotrans 2026: Your CAN products on CiA panel walls
The Innotrans trade show for transport technology takes place every two years in Berlin (Germany). From September 22 to 25, interested CiA members can present their CAN-based products on the CiA stand in hall 27, booth 290. Booking of panels on the CiA panel wall is possible using this formular by July 31.
Promote your company on CiA posters
CiA is working on upcoming editions of CANopen and CANopen FD posters, which are distributed on trade shows, conferences, and further CiA events.
