A word from the CiA Managing Director
CiA and the nonprofit EMG and VFMP associations have distributed the following press release:
“Many people with disabilities are able to drive thanks to special adaptations made to their vehicles. These modifications – such as hand controls or customized electronic systems – help ensure safe and independent mobility.
However, new cybersecurity rules for modern cars could unintentionally make these adaptations harder or even impossible to install. As a result, some drivers with disabilities risk losing the ability to drive altogether.
To prevent this, industry experts and organizations are working together to find practical solutions. One promising approach is the development of a standardized gateway to in-vehicle networks (IVN) through add-on electronic control units (ECUs), which allows approved adaptive systems to safely connect to a car’s internal electronic network.
This idea was recently supported at a meeting organized by the CAN in Automation (CiA), together with the European Mobility Group (EMG) and the German association representing vehicle adaptors for people with reduced mobility (VFMP).
A standardized gateway based on CAN (controller area network) technology would make it much easier to install specialized electronic components needed for vehicle adaptations. Similar systems are already used in commercial vehicles, taxis, and police cars.
Some industry groups have already committed to developing solutions that follow the CiA 447 standard, and other manufacturers are encouraged to join. While new EU regulations may eventually be needed, there is an urgent need for short-term solutions.
CiA, EMG, and VFMP are calling on EU institutions, vehicle manufacturers, and industry associations such as ACEA and VDA to support the rapid development of these standardized gateways. Their goal is simple: to ensure that people with reduced mobility can continue to drive and travel independently.”
It is a kind of urgent request by drivers with limited capabilities. Car converters need read and write access to in-vehicle networks. In a long term, EU regulation could help, but we need also a short-term solution. The CiA 447 gateway is one. CiA is ready to establish a joint working group to extend the current CiA 447 specification series. Interested parties, especially automakers, should contact the CiA office.
CiA webinar: CAN FD light ecosystem
The one-hour webinar on June 11 (start 13:00, UTC+2) provides an overview of the entire CAN FD light ecosystem, covering its motivation, technology, as well as device and system design aspects. The trainer also highlights the key differences compared to CAN FD. In addition, the webinar addresses the availability of CAN FD light and discusses current and future application fields. Participants will also have a room for questions and discussions.
The webinar is free of charge, presentation language is English. Registration via email is obligatory.
Call for comments on CiA 1305
CiA is going to review the CiA 1305 (CANopen FD layer setting services and protocols) document. Therefore, CiA is calling for comments. All submitted general, editorial, and technical comments will be evaluated. Please send your comments by September 30, 2026 to CiA.
Vehicle Tech Week
The Vehicle Tech Week trade show in Stuttgart (Germany) includes the Automotive Testing Expo. Several CiA members are exhibitors. The event is scheduled from June 23 to 25, 2026. This exhibition takes also place in China (August 26 to 28, 2026), North America (October 27 to 29, 2026), and India (April 20 to 22, 2027). In South Korea, the fair was held in March 2026.
CAN Newsletter magazine
The first issue of this magazine was published in June 1992 in a printed newsletter format with about 500 subscribers. Nowadays, it is an online publication with annually more than 100000 downloads. You can download also single articles. Since the beginning, it is published quarterly, focusing on CAN-related topics. The upcoming June issue is spot-lighting CAN applications in mobile machinery. Submission of press releases and news is still possible.
