Ultrasonic sensor

For on-vehicle fuel-flow measurements

The CAN-connectable Realflow sensor from Horiba Automotive is suitable for research and development as well as emissions testing according to relevant standards.

According to the company, the sensor with its ability for engine-bay installation has been designed for the ultra-low-volume fuel flow conditions found in today’s road car engines. The device uses a patented ultrasonic flow measurement technology to provide data with an accuracy of ±0,5 % of reading used e.g. for emissions testing according to RDE and WLTP standards. Such fuels as petrol, diesel, bio-diesel, ethanol, and methanol can be used.

The 330-g device dedicated for flow measurement ranges of 4 ml/min to 4000 ml/min works at -40 °C to +120 °C with a measurement rate of 1,1 kHz. It offers internal processing and diagnostics capabilities and provides CAN, TTL pulse, and analog outputs. The sensor supports the 11-bit CAN-Identifier and bit rates up to 1 Mbit/s. No termination resistor is provided. The unit with no moving parts is IP69K protected when mated to connector. For operation, it requires a power supply of 8 VDC to 30 VDC.

Employing digital processing techniques to measure the time of flight, it achieves the level of precision and stability typically associated with bulky, expensive laboratory equipment, said the manufacturer. With no restrictions on mounting orientation, it is able to be installed in any engine bay or on a test bed, continued the company. The implemented ultrasonic technology has been developed and used for years in motorsport - including FIA Formula 1, IMSA, DTM, Indycar, Nascar, WRC, and WEC.
