Soft starters enable a gentle ramp-up to full-speed motor operation to protect AC motors from the damage that can be caused by the initial current inrush associated with motor startup. ATS480 series are torque-controlled and equipped with torque ramp, dynamic braking, and DC injection stop modes as well as an embedded electronic thermal relay for motor protection. They are rated for operating voltages spanning 208 V to 690 V, operating current extending from 17 A to 1700 A, and effective power ranging from 4 kw to 900 kW. The soft starters comply with relevant CE, cULus, CCC, UKCA, RCM, EAC, DNV, ABS, BV, and CCS standards.

The devices feature the same hardware platform as the ATS48 series. This allows for drop-in replacements that preserve customers' initial investments. The soft starters also deliver the same robustness, reliability, 20-year durability, and start/stop performance, says the manufacturer. Additional features include digital enhancements, improved cybersecurity capabilities, and seamless integration with Schneider's Ecostruxure platform to help users simplify architecture selection, design, and execution processes, maximize energy efficiency, and reduce engineering time and costs, continues the company.

Digital enhancements to the ATS480 series include remote commissioning capabilities and embedded QR codes that reveal parameters for on-site troubleshooting. Added text keypad is capable of displaying warnings and history. Among others, the communication interfaces for CANopen and Devicenet are included. In terms of cybersecurity, the devices feature secure boot and firmware upgrades. Threat intelligence capabilities can generate security reports and restrict or disable ports and services, as well as user account authorization.

Suitable applications extend from normal to heavy-duty and include economical and high-horsepower motors (>500 HP), pumps, fans, compressors, saws, pulpers, agitators, mixers, grinders, crushers, refiners, presses, and material handling equipment.
