On February 25, 2020 the three-day exhibition for embedded systems opens its doors. The trade fair is a meeting place of embedded technology enterprises offering components, modules and complete systems, hardware and software, and services. As always, many CAN in Automation (CiA) members planned being among the exhibitors but this year a long list of them already cancelled their visit due to coronavirus. Bosch Automotive (other areas from Bosch are not affected so far) is one of them since almost all semiconductor manufacturers won’t be part of the trade fair except of Texas Instruments and Infineon. This means the CAN XL demonstrator will be showcased for the first time at the international CAN Conference not as planned at Embedded World.

Other CiA members who cancelled their visit include: Renesas, NXP, Cypress, Microchip, Rohm Semiconductor, Silicon Laboratories, STMicroelectronics, Mitsubishi Electric, and Toshiba Electronics Europe. Nevertheless, CiA still attends the fair in hall 1, stand 630 and the main topic is the availability of CAN FD building blocks. This includes CAN FD controllers, transceivers supporting bit-rates above 1 Mbit/s, higher-layer protocols using the 64-byte data field, and CANopen FD protocol stacks. Device designers can select interoperable products from different suppliers.

Besides CiA members, a range of other CAN product providers called off their participation at the exhibition as well. This includes for example: Analog Devices, Advantech, ARM, ON Semiconductor, Intel, Xilinx, Winbond Electronics, RS Components, Swissbit, EM Microelectronics, Avnet Integrated, Telit, Digi International, Digi-Key, and others.

The trade fair organizer NürnbergMesse states that they are taking a package of measures to ensure that exhibitors and visitors can participate in the exhibition safely and comfortably. This includes, according to the organizer, heightened cleaning and disinfection measures at all highly frequented placed such as catering areas, surfaces, handrails, restrooms, entrances and exits, public touchscreens as well as the higher availability of disinfection supplies.
