With J1939 interface

Hydraulic flow monitoring in mobile machinery

Webtec has launched the CTA series of hydraulic flow monitors. Via a J1939 interface, the device can monitor and transmit data about oil flow rates and temperature, making it suitable for use in predictive maintenance/IoT (Internet of Things) systems.

By permanently installing the CTA and communicating directly to the vehicle’s control and monitoring network, it’s possible to transmit performance data to the cloud or an IoT system with subsequent download and analysis in real time. The vehicle’s control system could also serve as a link to a centralized monitoring and diagnostic station. Due to predictive maintenance it is ensured to replace a component by engineers before it reaches the end of its useful life, without enduring a catastrophic failure, explained the company. Designed to meet the standards for components fitted to heavy duty vehicle applications, the meters have a J1939 interface for integration They provide both, a temperature and a flow rate output signal compatible with J1939 communication. The CAN bit rate is 250 KHz.

Application areas include earthmoving, mining, and municipal vehicles, as well as cranes and especially autonomous vehicles, where the flow monitor can continuously assess pump and system performance. When using variable displacement pumps, it’s possible to incorporate regular test routines into the vehicle’s operation so that monitoring takes place under consistent and known operating conditions.

For instance, the product can also facilitate real-time system performance information like hydraulic power output or pump volumetric efficiency by combining flow and pressure data, or even engine efficiency by comparing hydraulic power and fuel consumption. As a final point, the EMC-compliant, IP69K-rated flow monitors are made to survive conditions, including jet-washing, salt-spray, and heavy vibration.
