Hannover Messe 2023

Impression of CANopen products at the exhibition

From April 17 to April 21, the Hannover Messe 2023 took place. More than 4000 exhibitors presented their solutions for a digital, connected, sustainable industry, welcoming 130 000 visitors at the industrial trade fair. As always, CANopen was part of it.

The core topics at the exhibition included artificial intelligence, hydrogen, energy management, connected and intelligent production, and the Manufacturing-X data ecosystem. Exhibitors at the fair, along with the event organizers at Deutsche Messe, came to the conclusion that the technologies for competitive and, at the same time, climate-neutral industrial production are already available. The next step, they said, involved the need to make consistent use of all the available solutions. In addition to the 130 000 visitors on the exhibition grounds, the fair was able to count another 15 000 registered visitors who participated digitally in the event. They followed the conference program, informed themselves in digital product presentations and took part in hybrid visitor tours.

Abstract of CANopen products

Of course, CAN and CANopen were also part of the fair as always. Here are a few impressions of the exhibited products. CAN in Automation (CiA) Member Trafag implements CANopen in several areas of application. Trafag was one of the first manufacturers of pressure transmitters. At the exhibition, the company showcased the CMP 8270 CANopen pressure transmitter for applications like mobile hydraulics or testing equipment. It supports CiA 301, CiA 404, and CiA 305 version 2.0.

Suco extended its product portfolio of pressure transmitters and transducers by two digital CAN transmitters. The 0630/0631 series was primarily developed for operation in CAN systems in mobile hydraulics, where many decentralized interfaces of electronic control systems are used. CAN transmitters of the 0630 series support the CANopen protocol (according to CiA 301 and CiA 404) with a data transmission rate of up to 1 Mbit/s. The 0631 series is based on the J1939 protocol, which is mainly used in heavy commercial vehicles and mobile machines. Both pressure transmitters are designed for pressure ranges from 0 bar to 1 bar to 0 bar to 600 bar. Due to their stainless steel housing, they combine the advantageous material properties of analog transmitters with the advantages of digital transmission, said the company. The welded measuring cell made of stainless steel 1,4542 is corrosion-resistant and guarantees media compatibility at temperatures from -40 °C to +125 °C. The CANopen transmitters with IP67 protection are resistant to shocks and vibrations.

Pepperl+Fuchs showed its CANopen ultrasonic sensors at the exhibition. The products come in a 40 mm x 40 mm L2 design and offer an integrated CANopen interface that enables direct integration into CAN networks (the CAN Newsletter reported).

HMS presented its Ixxat product brand and Anybus products which also support CAN and CANopen. The portfolio consists of a large number of products that solve the most common types of communication problems in the machine and e-mobility sector, which also includes functional safety aspects, explained the company.

Ifm showcased its series of camera systems. They feature 3D detection of surroundings and objects around mobile machines. Whether vehicle automation or collision warning – with the integrated functions and the intuitive logic editor, many applications can be solved, said the company. The connection of the sensors is carried out via CAN for mobile applications using for example the CANopen or J1939 protocol. Digital and analog inputs/outputs are also available via an optional I/O module.

KEB Automation exhibited several of its CANopen-capable controllers. For example, the C6 embedded controller which can be used as a PLC (programmable logic controller). As a PLC, it can take over the control of an entire system or serve as a lower-level controller. The real-time bus system provides coordination and synchronous progress of the axes and enables consistent communication and diagnostics on all levels up to the drive.

The integrated motor drive series DRVI from Camozzi Automation, is designed to control various types of motors, both stepper and brushless, using a closed-loop control (FOC) algorithm. This algorithm, also known as vector control (FOC), offers better performance than traditional stepper motor control systems, which allows the stepper motor to operate over the entire speed range, ensuring fast acceleration and deceleration, assuring more accurate motion control with no loss of steps, explained the company. It is also more energy efficient than traditional control methods, as it uses precise rotor position feedback and controls the phase current, optimizing motor operation, the company continued. Different communication protocols are available including CANopen. Application areas are assembly and robotics, packaging, food and beverage, as well as life science.

Of course, there were way more CAN- and CANopen-related products part of the fair, this was just a first impression. The next Hannover Messe will be hosted from 22 April to 26 April, 2024.
