Position sensor

Designed for potentially explosive areas

Temposonics, company of the Amphenol Group, announced that the position sensors of the T-Series now feature ingress protection IP68, IP69, as well as Nema 4 and 4X. The sensors come with a CAN output.

The magnetostrictive linear position sensors have been specially developed for use in areas where they are exposed to flames or corrosive substances, for example. The demand for sensor solutions that meet the requirements for explosion protection is growing, especially for applications in power generation and chemical plants as well as on oil platforms, explained the company.

The Temposonics T-Series TH position sensors were already equipped with IP66 and IP67. Now the additions IP68/IP69 (according to IEC 60529) and Nema 4 or 4X (according to Nema 250) protection classes have been added. All three sensor outputs CAN (CANopen), Analog, and SSI feature these international and US and Canadian standard ingress protection classes. This means that users benefit from increased protection and can perform exact position measurement in their application when installed under water, said the company. The CANopen protocol complies to CiA 304 CANopen safety. It was published as an European Standard EN 50325-5.

The series was tested for seven days at the depth of 100 meters to ensure ingress protection class IP68 and IP69. Nema 4 are for housings in stainless steel 1.4305 (AISI 303) resp. Nema 4X for stainless steel 1.4404 (AISI 316L) provided the appropriate tubing and fittings are properly connected.

The non-contact Temposonics measuring method is particularly suitable for demanding applications in today's industrial environment, said the company. Due to the technology, the sensors are pressure-resistant and unaffected by vibrations and shock. Since no moving parts are mounted, the sensors are durable and require no maintenance. They can also be used where space is at a premium.

"We are very pleased to be able to offer our customers the T-Series TH position sensors now with higher ratings," explained Dr.-Ing. Eugen Davidoff, Approvals Manager at Temposonics. "With the addition of the new protection classes for all three outputs, even more challenging applications can now be equipped with these specifically designed sensors."
