A word from the CiA Managing Director

The postponed 17th international CAN Conference (iCC) will take place as an online event from June 14 to June 17. Originally, the iCC was planned as a two-day conference in Baden-Baden (Germany). However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it was postponed. Now, the iCC is scheduled on four half-days allowing people from Asia, Europe, and America to participate jointly at convenient times. The iCC program has not been changed significantly. At the end of each conference day, we provide a question and answer session, where all speakers of the day are present.

Unfortunately, the iCC is not accompanied by a tabletop exhibition. We also have no opportunities for informal talks as usually possible in the breaks. Alternatively, we offer the CiA CAN Coffee (C3) chat room for such informal meetings.

At the second conference day (June 15), several CiA interest groups (IG) and special interest groups (SIG) organize “open” two-hour meetings. In these meetings, the IGs and SIGs may report about their work plans, may discuss feature requests and comments on technical documents under development. This is an opportunity for non-members to get an impression of what is in the pipeline. It is so-to-say the CiA open house day.

On June 16 and June 17, CiA will provide free-of-charge 60-min webinars to different topics. Details will be given in the next weeks. Of course, the iCC participation is chargeable. Details can be found on the CiA website. As usual, early birds get a discount.

I would appreciate to meet many of you in the conference and question and answer sessions, the C3 chat room, the CiA open house day, or the webinars.

CiA glossary of terms

In order to avoid double-definitions, CiA provides and maintains a glossary of terms. It is referenced by new CiA specifications and new CiA technical reports. The CiA glossary of terms contains all definitions used by two or more CiA documents.

The introduced CAN XL evaluation board features a CAN XL FPGA using Bosch’s IP core and a physical CAN XL interface based on a transceiver by NXP. It comes with some PC software tools. The connection to the PC is realized by means of a CAN FD interface requiring a dongle. Some more details are available in the CAN Newsletter Online.

CiA technical group e-meetings

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, CiA office schedules all group meetings as videoconferences using Zoom. The scheduled meetings are listed on the CiA homepage. The participation is limited to members with the exception of invited guests. Normally, CiA office allows a temporary participation for one or two meetings also to non-members on request. Recently, the SIG subsea and the SIG truck gateway have been re-established.
