A word from the CiA Managing Director

CiA staff is back in office. Of course, hygienic measures protect CiA employees and visiting suppliers. We are all masked, when we meet visitors and suppliers. We also keep distance to each other.

Currently, all CiA meetings are organized online. In stead of face-to-face meetings, CiA office provides web-based seminars and other training opportunities. Additionally, you should consider the free-of-charge one-hour webinars or the CiA technology days. The first two CiA technology days took place in May. The presenting CiA secretaries updated the attendees about CAN FD, CANopen FD, CiA profiles, and CAN XL. Further CiA technology days, based on a different agenda, are in the pipeline. They will be listed in CiA's event stage.

CiA office is full operational to support CAN users and manufacturers for the times, when the Covid-19-caused lockdowns are over. Especially, the CAN Newsletter magazine and the CAN Newsletter Online offer the opportunity to keep in touch with potential customers. It is well known: “When times are good you should advertise, when times are bad you must advertise.” CiA’s publications report about CAN-related products, services, and solutions. They are available online and the prices for advertisements are more than reasonable. The media kit 2020 provides the details. More than 4 000 downloads of the CAN Newsletter March issue in nearly three month is not that bad (British understatement). Additionally, the CAN Newsletter Online was visited by 21 500 users in the first five month of this year.

CiA membership also increases. End of May, CiA had 695 members. Even in times of the novel coronavirus, CAN developments continue. There is no room for complacency.

CAN Newsletter magazine

The June issue focuses on the Covid-19 disease. There are also articles about the CAN XL protocol and CANopen FD (node-ID assignment and starter kit).

CAN XL is developing

In the last few weeks, many CAN XL related e-meetings took place. CiA made some progress in the protocol description, the dual-mode transceiver specification, and the higher-layer protocol definitions. We also inaugurated a task force developing a data link layer security protocol embedded in the CAN XL frame. In parallel, CiA members develop first prototype implementations.

CAN FD light

Another new activity is “CAN FD light”: This master/slave approach will be based on CAN FD and is intended for smart lighting applications and other sensor/actuator oriented in-vehicle networks. Of course, it is also suitable for other application fields. CiA has established a technical group specifying such a solution. In the inaugural meeting about 50 people participated.

CiA specification releases

Beginning of May, CiA has released the CiA 312‑7 conformance test specification which describes test cases for CiA 454 CANopen devices. These devices are suitable for light electric vehicles.
Additionally, the CiA 309 series has been updated and extended. The new part 5 specifies HTTP Restful and Websocket protocols to manage TCP/CANopen gateways and to control CANopen networks remotely.

CAN and CANopen seminars

CiA has organized web-based, four-hour CAN and CANopen seminars. The events are scheduled for July 15 and 16, 2020.

CAN Newsletter Online

  • 25 years ago:
Bosch introduced the first CAN-based anti-skid system. Known as electronic stability program (ESP), it was a milestone on the path to accidence-free autonomous driving. The system uses information about vehicle dynamics to detect whether the car is heading in the direction the driver is steering. If there is a discrepancy between these two factors, it takes action.
