A word from the CiA Managing Director

The year of CiA’s 30th anniversary has started as the last year ended: in the remote office. The CiA team works remotely from desks at home. In the first four months, all CiA meetings will be virtual including all education events. CiA’s trade show participation in the first half of 2022 was cancelled/postponed by the trade show organizers (Agritechnica, Embedded World) or by CiA itself (Interlift). CiA management cannot close the office and request CiA employees to go to fairgrounds.

Nevertheless, we made already in the first month some progress in CiA specifications and CAN-related standardization projects. For example, CiA has established the SIG (special interest group) fire-fighting developing and commenting profiles for equipment and body application used in fire-fighting vehicles. The first CiA CAN XL documents (CiA 610-1 and CiA 610-3) have been submitted to ISO for integration into the next edition of ISO 11898-1 and ISO 11898-2. The inaugural meetings for updating and revising these standards took place in January. Follow-up meetings are planned for March and April. In these meetings, the experts will review the first work drafts.

At the CES 2022 trade show in Las Vegas, some companies announced CAN-related news. The CAN Newsletter Online reported about them briefly. The Aurix MCU by Infineon supporting CAN XL will be in volume production in 2025. Of course, this means there are some days to go. But the virtual development environment allows to start rather soon with the design of CAN XL connectable devices. The next CAN XL plugfest planned for beginning of this year, has been postponed to May. This is another tribute to the Covid-19 pandemic that the CAN community has to pay.

I am looking optimistic into the next month. CiA will release some more CiA profile documents as Draft Specifications (DS), which can be purchased by non-members. This includes the CiA profiles for container-handling equipment, for on-board weighing devices, for RFID devices, and for motor starters. The CiA application profile for refuse-collecting vehicles is also in preparation for DS release.

Enquiries are welcome!

CiA office provides an email-based helpdesk. Questions are welcome and will be answered as quick as possible. This is a free-of-charge service for the entire CAN community. CiA office also provides e-meetings for members and non-members discussing technical and marketing topics regarding CAN technology.

Security workshop for members

CiA organizes a two-day free-of-charge workshop for its members. The online event on the first day introduces the current state of security in CAN-based networks with the focus on security communication protocols. The second day will focus on protocols establishing the secure communication connections namely certificate handling. Existing solutions will be shown. An open discussion is encouraged on how to enable this in CAN-based networks as well. The workshop will take place on February 21 and 22 at 14:00 to 17:00 UTC+1. Interested parties should contact secretary(at)can-cia.org. On CiA's website, more information will be released soon.

December issue of the CAN Newsletter magazine

The December issue of the CAN Newsletter magazine is online. It contains articles about generic CAN (FD) security requirements, achieving correct ESD protection for CAN FD, migration to CAN FD, application reports, and more. Additionally, Ken Tindell informs about how to defend against the Janus low-level CAN attack.

The articles can be downloaded individually or you can download the entire magazine.

CiA’s open discussion forum

CiA’ open discussion forum continues. It is an alternative for exhibitions to meet CiA representatives online in a Zoom meeting on every Friday from 11:00 to 12:30 (UTC+1). Topic of the next meeting on February 4, is CANopen FD. Of course, this does not limit the topics, which you like to discuss. It indicates just that a CiA expert on the scheduled topic is available.
