A word from the CiA Managing Director

The CiA membership statistics were updated on June 30. Currently, there are 727 members. Last year on June 30, CiA counted 700 members. Most of the members are located in Germany (308), in the U.S.A. (67), and in Italy (56). However, Switzerland has the highest density of members (37/8,6 million citizens). Most of the CiA members are device suppliers (460), followed by sub-system manufacturers (197), and service suppliers (103). Selecting multiple categories was possible. We counted 96 technology enablers and 43 tool suppliers. The number of original equipment manufacturers (OEM) is 75.

In the CiA membership, there are 152 suppliers of drives and motion controllers. Most of them implement the CiA 402 profile, which is currently under review. Some parts of this profile series are internationally standardized in IEC 61800-7-201/301. This profile approach is the most implemented drive and motion control specification. It covers frequency inverters, servo controllers, and stepper motors.

The CiA community also comprises sub-communities for lift/elevator control (52 members), subsea (gas & oil) trees (29), and refuse collecting vehicles (29). There are 27 members in the rolling stock business. They have been very active in the past, but the related Special Interest Group (SIG) is since some time in dormant state. In order to awake this group, CiA has scheduled a webinar reporting about the status of CANopen profile specifications and CANopen IEC standards for rail vehicle applications. CiA also exhibits at the Innotrans in Berlin, where interested parties can discuss their needs and demands with the CiA engineers. CiA has also scheduled a workshop, in which we like to agree on work items and a plan for updating the existing CiA specifications and to develop new ones.

About 430 members support CANopen. This number is rather stable. By the way, CiA has assigned more than 1500 CANopen vendor-IDs. The number of members providing J1939-based products is increasing (88 in 2022, 73 in 2021). The Interest Group (IG) J1939 collects the demands and wishes of these members, to represent them in the related standardization bodies (DIN, ISO, SAE, etc.). This allows CiA members to influence the development of J1939-related documents without participating in the working groups of CiA-external standardization bodies.

iCC 2020 white papers

Now, the proceedings of the 17th international CAN Conference (iCC) can be downloaded free of charge from the CiA website. The proceedings comprise more than 20 papers. They include several papers on CAN XL technology. CAN XL is the third generation of CAN lower layers providing a payload of up to 2048 byte and supporting bit rates of more than 10 Mbit/s.

CAN Newsletter magazine

The second issue of the free-of-charge CAN Newsletter magazine 2022 continues with the new series called “history and trends”. It contains feature articles on dedicated application fields. This time, it focuses on the history and trends of CANopen, CAN on and under sea, CAN in air and space as well as CiA members from the beginning.

Other topics include a case study on extending CAN, an application report on feeding cows using CAN, an open-source CANopen protocol stack, automotive diagnostics, a measurement and calibration tool, as well as a solution for complex CAN architectures. Brief news is provided in the section standards and specifications.

The articles can be downloaded individually or you can download the entire magazine.
