A word from the CiA Managing Director

The year of CiA’s 30th anniversary is coming to its end. In June, we had a wonderful two-day birthday event. I met in person old and new CiA fellows. After two years with just online meetings because of the Covid-19 pandemic, this was very pleasing. In this year, CiA participated again in some trade shows (Innotrans, Bauma, and SPS). The success was not overwhelming, but with the still existing travel restrictions we were rather satisfied: “It was not that bad” (British understatement).

Regarding CiA specifications, we made some progress in the development of the CAN XL ecosystem. CiA becomes a partner of the Autosar community, in order to harmonize the developments regarding CAN in both organizations. The CAN XL lower layer specifications CiA 610-1 (data link layer and physical coding sublayer) and CiA 610-3 (physical media attachment sub-layer) have been submitted to ISO for international standardization. The related ISO 11898-1 respectively ISO 11898-2 are already updated. The new editions are in DIS (Draft International Standard) ballot meaning the national standardization bodies can comment and vote on these documents.

The development and maintenance of other CiA specifications, especially CiA profiles, were continued as usual. There are still some new editions of CiA profiles in the pipeline to be released beginning of 2023. They are in the quality improvement process. CiA engineers double-check all documents after approval by the related CiA technical group. In a second and third step, I do a final approval respectively a cover approval, in which I check the Foreword and the Introduction sections. In the final approval, I am looking for violations of general CiA editing rules and the compliancy with the CiA house style document downloadable from the CiA website.

The times are challenging. Nevertheless, the year of 2022 was a success for CiA. We started with 712 members; now we have 751. With this in mind, I like to thank Reiner Zitzmann, CiA chief executive officer, and his entire team for the services they have provided to the CAN community. You have done a good job – thank you.

What’s left? Season greetings, merry Christmas, a happy New Year, and stay healthy.

Electronica 2022 exhibition

In 14 halls, the international electronics industry met again in person from November 15 to November 18 in Munich. 2144 exhibitors and about 70 000 visitors saw some announcements regarding CAN technology. This included new MCUs (micro-controller unit), board-level products, and more. The CAN Newsletter published several articles regarding this.

CiA workshop on battery and energy management

On December 13, 2022 organizes its last workshop of the year. Attendees can discuss with CiA the requirements of CAN-based battery and energy management. CiA uses the results of the discussions as bases for maintenance of its existing specifications such as CiA 418, CiA 419, CiA 454, CiA 458, CiA 302-9, and CiA 320. Additionally, CiA intends to evaluate, whether new CAN technologies such as CAN FD or CAN XL need to be considered.
