ScopeThis document specifies how CAN shall behave as a physical layer for Ethernet MAC frames. It specifies the aspects common to FD and XL; there are separate specifications for each of these that when read in conjunction with this document shall completely specify Ethernetification. This specification meets the requirements for Ethernetification: — The adaption layer shall carry all legal Ethernet frames and present them unchanged to all receivers. — The adaption layer shall support the broadcast of Ethernet frames to multiple receivers on a single bus. — The adaption layer shall handle small real-time control Ethernet frames with short latency requirements in the most timely manner. — The adaption layer shall support deterministic worst-case latencies (i.e. meet the requirements for CAN Response Time Analysis or Network Calculus). — The adaption layer shall be able to run as a purely software layer on all current hardware providing FD or XL. — The adaption layer shall define CAN frame ID use such that it can co-exist on the same bus segment with all 11-bit ID CC and FD traffic and all J1939-22 CC traffic. |
