CiA 611 CAN XL higher layer series is designed to define services and protocols identifying type of the message.

• CiA 611-1: CAN XL higher-layer functions — Part 1: Service data unit types (released, version 2.0.0);
• CiA 611-2: CAN XL higher-layer functions — Part 2: Multi-PDU protocol (released, version 1.0.0).

CiA 611-1 defines service data unit types for CAN CC, CAN FD, CAN XL, IEEE 802.3 etc. as well as provides examples for the types. The SDT defines the type of service data mapped to the data field of the CAN XL logical link control (LLC) sub-layer. The service data is provided by the layer using the CAN XL LLC sub-layer. The SDT also defines how management information such as addressing, virtualization, or data size is mapped on dedicated LLC frame fields or how they are mapped into the CAN XL LLC data.

CiA 611-2 defines the multi-PDU approach different from other multi-PDU concepts. It enables to combine from multiple sub-layered networks data and to transmit them in single CAN XL data frame. These sub-layered networks can use different network technologies and different CAN-based higher-layer protocols. This multi-PDU approach is in particular suitable for backbone networks.
