Application domains

CAN is used in a variety of application domains related to any part of our human life.

  • Transportation

CAN was originally developed for in-vehicle networking of passenger cars. Today, CAN is used for passenger cars, heavy duty vehicles, trains and rail vehicles, maritime and other vehicles.

  • Manufacturing

CAN is used in a broad variety of manufacturing industries, mainly for embedded machine control, but also for factory automation, process automation, and power generation.

  • Construction

CAN is used as an embedded network in construction machines. It is also used in building automation, for example, in lift control, embedded door control and HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning).

  • Agriculture

CAN is used in the stationary agriculture equipment as well as agriculture and forestry vehicles.

  • Healthcare

CAN is used as an embedded control network for medical devices and intensive care units, operating rooms, and other healthcare equipment.

  • Communication

CAN is used for postage and packaging and for embedded control in telecommunication equipment. For example letter sorting machines and conveyors are using CAN for embedded control.

  • Retail and finance

CAN is used for embedded control within vending machines including gas station equipment, and cash points.

  • Entertainment

CAN is used in studio and stage control systems, for example, lighting control and door control. It is also used in gambling machines and toys.

  • Science

CAN is used as an embedded control network for example, for high-energy physics experiments (proton accelerators), and astronomical telescopes.
