Retrofitted diesel locomotive uses CANopen

The VFLI French railway operator, a SNCF daughter company, has modernized its BB 63500 diesel locomotive family. In the course of modernizing the locomotive, numerous technological improvements were implemented in collaboration with Luetze (Germany). For the retrofit control system the Dioline 20 device family has been chosen.

The CANopen-connectable modules are used to monitor the temperature of various vehicle sub-functions. The limited space in the locomotives required the installation of the modules in different positions. The devices are DIN-rail mountable, which facilitates the installation in the control cabinet. Up to 10 modules are linked to the CANopen bus-coupler. The supplier offers a broad range of digital and analog I/O modules. Further significant space savings resulted by using compact interface modules, such as diode modules featuring 6,2-mm relays and interface converters. Consequently, valuable space could be saved in the control cabinet and the complex wiring could be simplified. The DIN-rail mountable products comply with the railway standards including the fire-safety requirements according to NFF16101-102. Furthermore, they comply with the classification I2/F2. For functions that were not available, the supplier developed some special modules for this project. For example, Luetze designed a threshold-switch for data-logging and functional testing of the parking brake.
