CiA’s Weekly Telegraph
CiA’s cross-media strategy is ambitious. On the website, on the other on-line media, and in the printed publications CiA informs about CAN technology, CAN-related products and services as well as CAN applications. All this information is highly hyperlinked. Often, one “story” is presented in different ways on several media.
In particular, the CAN Newsletter Online provides weekly and sometimes daily news. Because online-media don’t come automatically to the users, we send on demand CiA's Weekly Telegraph informing about the posted news and other publication activities by CiA. This guarantees that you are always updated without polling the online magazine. You can subscribe to this weekly email and of course, you can unsubscribe anytime.
CAN Newsletter (print)
Since June 1992, the CAN Newsletter is published. It is a unique source for engineers designing CAN products and CAN systems. Published quarterly, it contained in the last twenty years product and technology oriented articles as well as application stories. There were news and reports written by the editors as well as technical in-depth articles by external authors. Since March 2012, the news and reports are outsourced to the CAN Newsletter Online. On future the printed version of the CAN Newsletter will contain mainly technical articles and detailed application reports with a longer “expiration date”. The subscriber has the option to receive it in hardcopy by mail or to download it in PDF format from the Internet. The reviewed layout includes a sidebar with service information such as abstract, summary, links, and brief company or technical background information.
CAN Newsletter Online
The CAN Newsletter Online is a spin-off of the printed CAN Newsletter. It is highly integrated into CiA’s website, and it is also linked to CiA’s Product Guides. In addition, the editors provide a lot of helpful hyperlinks for the experienced users as well as for newcomers. This includes editorial links to related articles, to the URLs of the mentioned companies, and to additional information sources including downloads (e.g. specifications and conference papers). In addition, there are sponsored links related to the article (e.g. company profile, data sheets, handbooks) and sponsored links related to the general topic (e.g. semiconductor, actuator, protocol stack, analyzer) – for example product guide entries.
The used nomenclature is similar to the one in the CiA Product Guides. On the main overview pages (Hardware, Software, Tools, Engineering), the user in a hurry can get an overview on the top stories. A search function will help to find the information you are looking for. If you have more time, you can read the complete articles – the news and the reports and also the other stories including the brief news. Brief news is a summary on a specific topic (e.g. encoder or CAN-to-USB modules). With them the chronicle duties are fulfilled. From time to time, features and dossiers about interesting topics (e.g. new applications or new technologies) are published, as well.
CiA Product Guides
The CiA Product Guides for CAN, CANopen, and J1939 provide systematically information about products and services as well as sales contacts worldwide. They are highly integrated into the CAN Newsletter Online. Reading an article about a specific topic (e.g. I/O module) provides automatically those product guide entries with related products by means of sponsored links. Of course, the reader can also browse through the product guides independent of the online magazine.
The CAN Product Guide is not related to any higher-layer protocol. It provides information from the chip level (micro-controller, CAN controller, and transceiver) up to the system level (tools and development services). The CANopen Product Guide provides a standardized feature list for all devices, which simplifies the selection of CANopen products. The J1939 Product Guide is a unique information source for designers of commercial, in particular diesel engine powered, vehicles.
Literature
CAN in Automation offers several information brochures and the technical magazine CAN Newsletter. Proceedings from past international CAN Conferences are available at no cost or at low cost for the latest iCC proceedings. To order the brochures, proceedings, or a CAN Newsletter sample copy, please go to the literature order form.
Advertising in CiA’s publications
Of course, the professionally edited publications need to be financed. There is no free lunch! The editors and the administrational staff need to be fed. The printing house, the post mailing, and the web provider cause some additional expenses.
If you want to advertise your products and services, there are several opportunities such as classical advertisements in the printed version of the CAN Newsletter, which are combined with a banner ad in the CAN Newsletter Online publication for a period of time (e.g. three months). Other options are the sponsored links: The topic-related links are temporarily bookable, while the article-related ones are permanent links. The entries in the CiA Product Guides are also time-limited (one year). Links to your product or service entry appear automatically as sponsored links in the related “frame” of the CAN Newsletter Online.
Keep in mind that most of these advertisement opportunities improve mainly the image of your company. Don’t count just clicks or leads. CAN is not a short-term business as cellular phones, it is an investment business, where your company’s long-term image counts. With your advertisement you are part of the community, and your business increases substantially. Don’t live from hand to mouth. By the way, advertisement rates are very reasonable.
