Bridges, routers, and gateways

Devices that provide a connection between CAN-based networks and other wired or wireless communication systems are distinguished as bridges, routers, and gateways, depending on their functionality. Bridges provide connectivity between two or more CAN networks; cut-through bridges and switched bridges are available. Routers interconnect networks at the network layer, and gateways link networks with different application layers.
Routers and gateways that comply to the appropriate CANopen specifications are easy to integrate into CANopen networks. Some of these profiles are already published:

  • CANopen router (CiA 302-7)
  • TCP/IP gateway including ModbusTCP (CiA 309 series)
  • AS-Interface gateway (CiA 446)
  • J1939 gateway (CiA 413-6)
